A Therapist Finds His Calling in the Immigration Community
“Ramos decided to become a counselor after seeing the effects of poverty while growing up on the lower East Side of Manhattan. The social ills were many—drug addiction, violence, lack of social services, and people with emotional and mental health problems. He said there were insufficient service providers, and few were professionals of color. He decided to pursue a career in the helping professions and has been providing services to his community for years.” - SAMHSA
Dr Ramos provides mental health assessments for people in immigration proceedings, assessing for extreme hardship for 601-waivers and cancellation of removal, and for abuse in VAWA cases and credible fear in asylum cases. Dr. Ramos uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and other theories and techniques to support clients through growth and change. He has provided hundreds of immigration evaluations in New York City, Yonkers and Westchester County.
Dr. Ramos continues to work collaboratively with attorneys throughout New York City, providing timely, comprehensive evaluations, which include in-depth testing relating to the mental health status of the applicant.

What are Dr Ramos’ evaluations like?
Dr. Ramos’ evaluations consist of a one-on-one interview with the applicant, which follows a number of “psychometric tests.” These tests reveal the applicant’s psychological symptoms, which can be used to support a hardship case.
Dr. Ramos uses evidence practices to explore the applicant’s mental health and hardships. His interviews go at the pace that the applicant is comfortable with, as Dr. Ramos seeks to capture as much information as possible to support the applicant’s case. Dr. Ramos will then closely work with the attorney to articulate the applicant’s immigration challenges.
Dr. Ramos pays close attention to the details relative to an applicant’s experience and their specific case. He guarantees an in-depth interview, at the applicant’s own pace. Dr. Ramos’ goal is to use evidence that will help support applicant cases. He will talk about the details that the applicant is comfortable speaking about, and it will be his priority to gently explore and discuss the information that he believes will be the most supportive to the applicant’s waiver.
